McKenna Smith, Intern
Relationship-Focused
McKenna believes that every person has a story worth understanding. Her passion for becoming a therapist began with a deep curiosity about people — what shapes us, how our experiences influence the way we connect with others, and how our relationships can become both our greatest source of pain and our greatest source of healing.
Growing up in a blended family gave McKenna a deep appreciation for the importance of healthy relationships. She is passionate about helping individuals, couples, and families strengthen their connections, overcome life’s challenges, and create meaningful, lasting change.
As a Marriage and Family Therapy intern, McKenna works with couples, families, teens, adults, military families, and first responders. She has a special passion for helping couples rebuild trust, improve communication, and reconnect. She also enjoys supporting individuals navigating anxiety, trauma, grief, life transitions, and relationship concerns.
Therapeutic Approach
McKenna’s approach is rooted in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Attachment Theory, two evidence-based models that help clients better understand themselves and the relationships that matter most. She believes our earliest experiences shape the ways we connect with others, and that greater awareness of these patterns creates meaningful opportunities for healing and lasting growth.
She strives to create a warm, collaborative, and nonjudgmental environment where clients feel genuinely seen, heard, and accepted. Viewing each client as the expert on their own life, McKenna tailors therapy to meet clients where they are while compassionately helping them move toward the goals and relationships they desire.
Known for her approachable, bubbly personality and genuine warmth, McKenna balances compassion with authenticity, creating a space where clients can safely explore difficult emotions while finding hope and encouragement along the way.
Education
McKenna earned her Bachelor’s degrees in Family Studies and Psychology from Central Michigan University, with an emphasis in Communication Sciences and Disorders. She is currently completing her Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at National University. McKenna provides counseling under the supervision of licensed Marriage and Family Therapists. She is committed to providing compassionate, evidence-based care while continually growing as a clinician.
Personal Life
Outside the therapy room, McKenna enjoys spending time outdoors with her fiancé and their dog, Ranger, and making memories with her large, blended family. She believes some of life’s greatest moments come from slowing down, being present, and investing in the relationships that matter most—a value she brings into her work with every client.
