Queen Creek Office & Online

Philosophy
Melissa believes that every person has the potential to be the hero of their own story. Her approach is person-centered, with a strong focus on understanding how family systems and relational patterns shape who we are. By exploring the family dynamics we come from, Melissa helps clients identify patterns, shift perspectives, and develop new ways of thinking that support healing and growth. She is passionate about creating a safe, supportive space where clients can discover their strengths and work toward their goals.
Experience
Melissa spent 18 years as an elementary school teacher, working closely with students to support their emotional regulation and social development. During that time, she also helped lead Hope Squad, a peer-to-peer suicide prevention program, and taught social-emotional and mindfulness lessons to students. Before her teaching career, Melissa had the opportunity to stay home with her four children, an experience that deepened her understanding of child development, family dynamics, and the importance of nurturing strong connections.
Education and Training
Melissa is currently completing a Double Master’s Degree at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions, pursuing both a Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a Master of Science in School Counseling. She is completing her clinical internship here at East Valley Family Therapy, where she is supervised by Lawana Mortensen, LMFT. Melissa is excited to walk alongside her clients as they navigate life’s challenges and discover their inner resilience.
Personal
Melissa’s own life experiences, including profound personal loss, have shaped her deep empathy and understanding for those navigating grief, trauma, and mental health challenges. Originally from northern Utah, Melissa recently traded snowy winters for sunny Arizona and is loving the change of pace. When she’s not working with clients, she enjoys paddle boarding, traveling, spending time with her children, and spoiling her Frenchie, Stitchie.
